T.O. Jam 2016 – Unity 3D

This was my 4th game jam in the past 2 and a half years! We had a team of 7 for this jam, but only 5 of us were the core team. The other 2 were game jam floaters who provided additional art and audio. Alabama Stones and the Goblet of Goat is what we named our game! This was our entry into T.O. Jam 2016. The theme was… There will be consequences. Our idea was simple, a temple of doom environment where setting off switches and triggers always results in consequences!

A tribute to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, sort of :D. In this game you play as Alabama Stones and his adventurous side has lead him to an ominous temple where he is in search of the Goblet of Goat! As he enters the temple though he realizes that there are some mummies frozen in time. Beware of the mummies as taking them on head on will not be very smart, as you can only really kill them from behind. Alabama Stones must use his environment to hide in front of, or behind objects to sneak past the mummies. Alabama Stones also has his trusty lantern filled with kerosene, which not only lights his way, but can also be used to burn enemies too. He can also use his grapple hook (which works like Indiana Jones’s whip) to traverse up or swing across hazards. He has to make his way through the temple avoiding or killing enemies and must find the Goblet of Goat!

Once again I set up the version control for this project. I then programmed Alabama Stones’s hiding mechanic, where he can hide either in front of foreground objects, or behind background objects. I also programmed the boulder trap and pressure plate trigger in the later part of the level and set up the locations of that trap as well as the spike traps. I also did most of the lighting effects within the game, especially how Alabama’s lantern affects his surroundings when he is in the open and when he is hiding behind, or in front of objects. I also worked in tandem with our 3D Artist/Modeler to design the level layout.

This game jam went by very smoothly as we kept our game idea and scope minimal and really focused on the core game play mechanics and not making a huge level or adding too many game features.
